Being an organized person is not something that comes naturally to everyone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t develop this as a habit! Everyone can be a little more organized and a little less cluttered and messy, which not only makes your space look better, but it helps you feel better as well.

Whether you want to reduce stress in your life, have a more orderly and cleanly home, or improve your mental clarity, these tips will help you to become a more organized person.

Tackle the Clutter First

Before you can organize your life and your home, you need to declutter it. This can seem intimidating, but it isn’t so bad when you start with just one area at a time. To gain some momentum, start with one small area of your home to clean and organize.

A good place to start is your kitchen junk drawer, since it won’t take a long time, but will make a huge difference in how you feel. Just having this one drawer organized gives you a lot of momentum to begin tackling other cluttered areas of your home.

Consider Areas That Are Most Disorganized

To start organizing your home, you need to create systems. This can be done by thinking about the areas of your home that tend to be disorganized and cluttered most often. For many people, the countertops are where a lot of clutter and disorganization happens. This could be from bringing in mail, paperwork, homework and assignments from your kids, bottles of vitamins and medications, keys and purses, and so many other random things that all get thrown onto the kitchen counters.

If this is an area of your home that often gets cluttered, then this is where a lot of your organization focus should be. Just starting with something as simple as baskets and bins will make a huge difference.

Use One Calendar or Planner For Everything

A common problem people experience is getting overwhelmed by using too many journals, planners, and calendars. You really should have just one calendar and/or planner. Don’t use both, and try to stick to only digital or only paper. There are a few exceptions, but if you struggle keeping up with this habit, then your problem might be trying to use more than one.

Organize Your Thoughts

You need a place to declutter your mind too! This is where journaling comes in. With journaling, you are able to write about anything on your mind, start processing these thoughts and emotions, and begin to organize your thoughts. Through a series of journal entries, lists, and brainstorming sessions, you will notice your brain feels a lot less cluttered.

Create a Schedule for Organizing

To keep up with your organization, it helps to have a schedule and a routine set up for it. In the beginning, it is a matter of decluttering and organizing different spaces of your home, but once you do that, you need to keep up with it. This is where a schedule comes in.

Think about the days of the week when you have a little free time and would be able to keep up with your organizing. Your systems, such as what you do with mail and paperwork, will also help. You should also add organizing and decluttering to your weekly schedule to keep up with it.

Prep and Plan as Much as Possible

People who are organized on a consistent basis often prepare and prep ahead of time, with just about everything in their life. The more you can plan ahead, the easier it becomes not just to get organized, but to stay organized.

There are many things you can begin prepping and preparing for ahead of time, from laying out your clothes the night before, to making lists of tasks, to-dos, and errands. Meal prep and plan your meals, and put everything on your calendar.
